The edges of the leaves of the compass plant (Silphium laciniatum)are mostly oriented in a north-south direction, thus the name. This is another one of my favorites, it can reach twelve feet and is just coming into bloom. In my wildflower book it says the hardened sap of this plant can be chewed like gum.
